Are dental crowns always the best choice? Actually, no. Dental crowns are a good choice for those teeth that have been so damaged by either a cavity or other infection that a regular filling will not resolve the problem. However, dental crowns are only useful for those teeth that have not had their roots infected as well. If the root of the tooth is infected, then there is nothing to attach the dental crown to. Basically, dental crowns are used as tooth replacements by attaching the artificial tooth to the actual tooth root of the damaged tooth that has been removed. But if the tooth root has been severely damaged as well, there is nothing to attach the crown to. So, are dental crowns always the best choice? Only when you tooth has been severely damaged but its root is still completely intact.
If your root has also been infected, then you will have to have the entire tooth and the root removed and replaced with a dental implant. A dental implant is an artificial tooth root made out of metal (often it is titanium) that is inserted in the spot where your tooth and tooth root used to be. Once your mouth has healed around the implant, a dental crown is then attached to the implant just like it would normally be attached to the actual tooth root.
